More than writing, writing well.

Writing is much more than putting words together. Our writing mirrors our thinking and the way we communicate. Improving the way we write is an investment. Can there be good leaders without good followers?

Portuguese without doubts

Mistakes that turn up every day in minutes, e-mails and reports — and the rule that settles them.

Mistakea gente vamos

vai ou vamos?

Today, a gente «vai» or «vamos» to the concert?

The correct form is:a gente vai

With the expression «a gente», the verb must always be in the singular, agreeing with that expression.

Mistakehouveram pessoas

houve ou houveram?

Can we say that «houve» or «houveram» many people were involved?

The correct form is:houve pessoas

When it is the main verb, haver is only conjugated in the 3rd person singular, because it is an impersonal verb (há, houve, havia, haverá, haveria, haja...).

Mistakeele interviu

interveio ou interviu?

Yesterday, the MP «interveio» or «interviu»?

The correct form is:ele interveio

The verb intervir is conjugated like the verb it is built on, vir: ele veio; ele interveio.

Mistakefaria-o, se possível

fá-lo-ia ou faria-o?

Would you do the project in under a week? — «Fá-lo-ia» or «faria-o», if possible?

The correct form is:fá-lo-ia, se possível

In the future and the conditional, object pronouns (-me, -te, -o, -lhe...) go in mesoclisis, that is, in the middle of the verb, before the tense and person endings. You can get round this difficulty by replacing the conditional with the imperfect, and the future with «vou fazer» or «hei-de fazer».

Mistaketu fostes

foste ou fostes?

Did you go to work — «foste» or «fostes»?

The correct form is:tu foste

The form for the 2nd person singular of the preterite of the verbs ir and ser is «foste». The form «fostes» is the 2nd person plural: vós fostes.

Mistakeà muito tempo

há muito tempo ou à muito tempo?

I haven't seen you for a long time: «há muito tempo» or «à muito tempo»? I saw you a week ago: «há uma semana» or «à uma semana»?

The correct form is:há muito tempo

The verb form «há» (from haver) can take a temporal meaning, and can be replaced by «faz»: faz muito tempo, faz uma semana. It has a durative value in the past.

Mistakeorgão

órgão ou orgão?

The competent body: «órgão» or «orgão»?

The correct form is:órgão

This word takes an acute accent on the «o». Paroxytone words ending in «ão», such as sótão, órfão and bênção, are always written with a written accent, because the stress falls on the penultimate syllable.

Mistakerúbrica

rubrica ou rúbrica?

You don't need to sign, an initial is enough... «rubrica» or «rúbrica»?

The correct form is:rubrica

It is a paroxytone word, stressed on the penultimate syllable (-bri-). «Rubrica» can be a noun, meaning “abbreviated signature” or “subject”, or the 3rd person singular present indicative of the verb rubricar, meaning “to sign in abbreviated form”. The paroxytone rubrica is used for all senses.

Mistakepóssamos

possamos ou póssamos?

So that we may be happy: «possamos» or «póssamos»?

The correct form is:possamos

The verb forms of the 1st person plural of the present subjunctive are paroxytone, that is, the stress falls on the penultimate syllable: tenhamos, sejamos, possamos.
